Coelacanth (March 2008)
The Coelacanth project was the union of several ideas that had been rolling around inside my head for a while. I really enjoy working with heavy steel, but wanted to branch out into thinner material with the hopes that someday I would be able to bring my work home instead of always relying on school welding lab equipment. I wanted to do a project based on sheet metal, and decided that by using a papercraft model as a guide I could make the Coelacanth. The material is 22ga steel, cut with a plasma torch and gas welded. The finish was oxidized using the torch and then wire brushed. The spots are brass brazed. This was my first completed project since taking a welding hiatus while on the east coast.
